IP Whois lookup

Find the registered network behind an IP address.

Enter a public IP address to see its registration.

Whois shows network registration information. A registered organization’s address is not the physical location of the IP user.

Understand an IP registration record

This tool retrieves IP registration information using RDAP from the responsible registry. Whois is the familiar name of the task; the response source is shown so you can distinguish a registry response from a RIPEstat fallback.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter a public IP address, for example 8.8.8.8. Domain-name registration searches are not supported here.
  2. Read the network name, range and registry, then inspect any returned events or notices.
  3. Use View raw response and registry notices to inspect fields omitted from the summary.

What the fields mean

Network name and handle
Identifiers assigned in a registry record; they are not subscriber identities.
IP range
The start and end addresses of the returned registration object.
Registration country
A registration field, not the physical location of the IP user.
Type and status
Registry-defined record attributes; not a VPN or abuse-risk score.
Source and events
The data service and supplied record dates. A fallback is explicitly identified.

Common questions

Does Whois identify the person using an IP?

No. Network registration usually concerns an allocated or assigned address range. It is not a directory of individual users.

Why do Whois and the map disagree?

They describe different things: registration information versus a geolocation database estimate.

Why is a field missing?

Registries expose different fields. IPTestor preserves missing values instead of inventing an organization or contact.
