Can an IP address reveal residential or business use?
An ASN or organization name is evidence about a network. It is not enough to prove that an individual IP belongs to a home, business or VPN user.
Separate the questions
IP version, network registration, connection type and abuse reputation answer different questions. The address format can establish IPv4 or IPv6. A registration lookup can identify a registered range. Neither by itself establishes the service purchased by the end user.
An internet provider may serve homes, businesses and mobile subscribers through related networks. A range registered to an enterprise may be operated by a hosting partner. The label on a network is therefore not a reliable substitute for subscriber-level evidence.
How to use ASN and Whois evidence
Compare the ASN organization in IPTestor with the responsible registry’s RDAP record. Read the range and record type as well as the organization name. If IPTestor falls back to RIPEstat, the result identifies that source rather than presenting it as the original registry.
A registry contact country or postal address is a registration detail. It may differ from the location where an IP is used. If these fields disagree with the map, preserve both observations and explain their different meanings.
Residential does not mean safe
A residential connection can be compromised or shared through a proxy. A data-center address can serve a legitimate business. Network category and risk should not be collapsed into a single safe-or-dangerous label.
A useful risk assessment needs dated evidence about the behavior or listing being evaluated, along with a clear scope and error policy. Absence from one blocklist is not proof of safety, and a historical listing may not describe the current user of a reassigned address.
What IPTestor reports today
This version reports address version, approximate location and ASN information when available. It does not assign residential, commercial, mobile, VPN, Tor or abuse-risk labels. An unavailable field is preferable to an unsupported classification.
If you need a provider to verify a connection category, ask which evidence supports that exact address, when it was updated, whether IPv6 is covered, and how disputes are corrected. Avoid a service that offers a precise-looking percentage without explaining what that percentage measures.
